This post serves as a point of reference to troubleshoot connection problems between the ChatBlazer client and server. The most commonly encountered symptom is the client showing the message "Failed to connect to server" in the chat login box.

Before you start
Ensure that the ChatBlazer server is started. Sometimes, the ChatBlazer may try to start but encounters an error during its initialization, thus it terminates before listening for connections. Always check the server logs - server.log - to determine that the server has started and is listening for connections.

Find out what port the ChatBlazer server is using to listen for connections. The default port is 18001. Check conf.xml to find out the port used. It is specified in the following parameter.
<param name="port" value="18001"/>

Try the Administrator
Try to connect using the Administrator by running it as a desktop application, i.e. cb8admin.exe.

If the Administrator cannot connect, check the following possibilities.
  1. Host and port must match.
  2. Is there a firewall, either on the client or server side, that is blocking the connection?

A simple test of connecting to the ChatBlazer server can be done with the Telnet application. The test should be done from a computer in an external network.
C:\>telnet chatblazer.com 18001
Connecting To chatblazer.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 18001: Connect failed

A typical error message like the one above will appear if you cannot connect.

Proceed to the next section only after the Administrator can connect.

Testing the Client
Ensure that you are accessing the client through a HTTP/HTTPS URL, not directly as a file URL.

If the server listening port has changed, you need to make changes to the following files.
  • client/config.xml
    <socket host="" port="18001" timeout="15000" />
  • server/crossdomain.xml
    <allow-access-from domain="*" to-ports="18001" />

Change the port value as necessary.

Still cannot connect
If you still have the connection problem after going through the above checklist, please feel free to contact our support team via email. Please provide the URL of your chat client page.
